The California Department of Consumer Affairs (DCA) and its boards and bureaus protect and serve California consumers through oversight, enforcement, and licensure of professionals. This Consumer Protection Week, DCA has 3 things you need to know as a California consumer:
- Check a license – Checking a license empowers you to make informed decisions that protect you and your family. You can visit DCA’s license search tool page to verify if a professional is licensed by a DCA board or bureau. You can also call DCA’s Consumer Information Center at 800-952-5210 to speak with a representative in English or Spanish. Agents can also help connect you to help in more than 200 other languages. Each license record will reflect if a license is current, expired, or has been subject to disciplinary action such as suspension or revocation.
- File a complaint – You should file a complaint if you believe a professional or business has engaged in unprofessional conduct, related to their professional responsibilities. Complaints must be submitted in writing online or mail by printing and filling out a complaint form, attaching any supporting documentation, and mailing to the Consumer Information Center Correspondence Unit at 1625 N Market Blvd. Ste N-112, Sacramento, CA 95834.
- Stay connected and involved – Follow DCA and any of its boards or bureaus of interest on social media to stay up to date with consumer protection tips, information about new laws that impact the professionals that serve you, including how to access public board or bureau meetings.
