There’s an amusing meme out there that mimics the look of dark hair roots exposed on a blonde head, bushy eyebrows, grown out acrylic nails and dilapidated eyelashes. The parody represents what people might look like while sticking to the shelter in place order for several weeks. While some may worry about how to deal with their beauty needs, those offering these services have a lot more on their plate to handle.

After California’s stay at home order was put in place, hundreds of thousands of professional barbers, cosmetologists, nail technicians, and estheticians had to close their doors and stop seeing clients. Like many businesses, these professional service providers will struggle and many might not survive the financial hit.
With home visits out of the question, there are still some things clients can do to support their service provider. Here are a few ideas that may help licensed professionals stay above water.
- Purchase retail products from your provider that is normally sold in the shop like shampoos, hair spray, nail polish and face cleansers.
- Offer to pay your service provider for an online or webcam consultation or instructions on how to perform services on yourself.
- Purchase gift cards from your provider that can be used at a later time.
California cosmetologist Luci Seed said she would be willing to go the extra mile to help meet her clients’ needs.
“They can get a hold of me through text or FaceTime so I can see their hair color,” said Seed. She also said she would deliver the retail products she has in stock, but as time goes by, her inventory will dwindle.
If you decide to contact your service provider to see if they can assist you, be sure to check the status of their license by visiting the California Board of Barbering and Cosmetology at https://www.barbercosmo.ca.gov/.
